Common Questions

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an active and thoroughly researched approach that focuses on how our thoughts and feelings influence our actions. It is widely seen as the most effective treatment available for anxiety. The "cognitive" part involves looking at thoughts together in therapy so that we can determine if these thoughts are helpful or creating suffering. The "behavioral" part involves understanding how these unhelpful thoughts may be leading to unhealthy and unfulfilling behaviors. CBT involves our thoughts, but even more critical is how we are practicing and committing to new and meaningful actions that move us toward the people we want to be. Together, we will learn to work skillfully with thoughts and painful emotions so that you can suffer less, show up to your life more fully, and do what matters most to you.

Do you prescribe
medication?

As a psychologist, I do not prescribe medication. I have worked very closely with psychiatrists in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 20 years, and I've seen medication be incredibly helpful in many situations. Medication is always a serious endeavor so I work hard to exhaust the limits of talk therapy before considering medication options. If you have a treating psychiatrist or you decide that you would like to work with one, I can help with referrals and will collaborate closely with all involved providers.

Will my insurance cover
your services?

At this time, I do not participate in any HMO/managed care panels. If you have a PPO health insurance plan, your mental health carrier may reimburse you for all or a portion of my fee.  After each session, I can provide you with an invoice that you can submit to your insurance company. I encourage you to speak with your insurance company about your mental health coverage options.

What else should
I know?

During our initial phone conversation we will discuss scheduling, fees, and frequency of sessions. Sessions are 50 minutes and take place weekly or twice weekly.

My rates reflect current market trends as well as my level of training and expertise. Payment is required at the time of each session.

I ask that you contact me by phone, email, or through the online system at least 48 hours in advance if you need to reschedule or cancel a session. I do charge the full session fee for meetings that are not cancelled with 48 hours notice.
